Kang family focused on recovery instead of money worries

Kang family focused on recovery instead of money worries

Borah Kang says her family would have been broken – without food or a place to live – if it hadn’t been for help from Carle.

Kang and her family immigrated to the United States from South Korea so she could attend the University of Illinois. Soon after, Kang’s 72-year-old mother, Chung Soon-Moon, developed pneumonia. She needed urgent medical care her family could not afford.

At the time, Kang reached out to Carle and was extremely pleased with the options available to help her.

“Without that assistance, my mother would not be here today,” said Kang, still grateful years later.

Carle believes cost should not stop anyone from receiving the care they need. It’s important to know you may be able to receive free or discounted care. If you need help, contact Patient Financial Services at (888) 712-2753.

Kang and her family received 100 percent financial assistance coverage until she was able to get on a plan on her own. Kang graduated from the U of I with her doctorate in 2014, and she is now a professional concert pianist. She plays at The Windsor of Savoy, which provides independent and assisted living for seniors, as well as many other places as requested.

Kang encourages people to not be afraid to ask for help. She feels strongly Carle will help anyone they can.

“We make the application process as simple as we can for the patient. We’ve implemented new tools over the last couple of years to validate whether or not a patient might qualify for the program in just minutes – either by phone phone call or an in-person visit to a Patient Accounting office,” said Jodi Eeten, manager, Patient Financial Services.

“Our primary goal is to touch as many lives as we can and to remove some of financial stress that often comes with obtaining necessary medical care,” said Eeten.

In 2017, Carle provided $184 million in services, donations and support to our community, including $32.4 million in free or discounted care to more than 34,500 patients.
