Each year, Carle Health selects two administrative fellows to support the organization’s operations and provide an opportunity for talented individuals to gain experience in hospital operations, health plan management, physician group practice administration and other corporate support functions.
The 2021-2022 fellows were Amisha Patel and Logan Carroll. Their fellowship work, which began in June 2021 included drafting a process map to administer a new Alzheimer’s drug to qualifying patients, standing up additional COVID-19 testing sites and increasing bed capacity during COVID-19 surges, running the 2022 BEST Program, identifying opportunities to reduce surgical case costs in operating rooms and supporting population health efforts.
“Administrative fellowships are springboards to launching a career in healthcare leadership. Before I commenced my master’s program, I knew I wanted to hold a leadership role. As I learned more about an administrative fellow and spoke with friends who were fellows, I knew that completing a fellowship was the path for me,” Patel said. “Completing a fellowship at Carle presented an opportunity for Logan and me that most other fellowship programs don’t offer — the opportunity to work in both a growing hospital system and health plan.”
Carroll said he most enjoyed being able to work with top leaders of a health system like Carle Health who provide so much support and mentorship. “It was also great to work with a variety of leaders and teams on tacking certain issues, whether it was increasing bed capacity during the COVID-19 surges or seeking innovative ways to improve experiences for patients and team members,” he said.
“Both Logan and Amisha brought a unique skill set and experiences to the fellowship, so I certainly learned as much from them as they did from me as their instructor,” Caleb Miller, senior vice president, Carle Specialty and Ambulatory Care, said. “The experience of seeing the fellows grow in their understanding of the many aspects of healthcare is extremely rewarding,”
Before starting the administrative fellowship, Patel earned a master’s degree in health administration (MHA) from Governors State University. She worked with her father overseeing the operations and growth of his community pharmacy in Chicago, completed medical school, and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in business management from Loyola University Chicago.
Carroll’s background includes receiving his master’s degree in Health Administration MHA from the University of Kentucky, a bachelor’s degree in public health from Western Kentucky University and an internship with different health systems that fostered his interest in healthcare administration.
After completing their fellowships this summer, Patel and Carroll transitioned to new Carle Health roles. Patel is a practice manager for Women’s and Children’s Inpatient Services at Carle Foundation Hospital, and Carroll is the Population Health Improvement program manager for Health Alliance.
“Often times our fellows stay on at Carle in an important role within the organization,” Miller said. “The result of all this equates to Carle Health building out a stronger leadership team to help us meet our mission.”
Carle Health welcomed Nicole Kase and Meredith Johnson-Monfort as the 2022-2023 administrative fellows this summer. Applications are now open for the 2023-2024 administrative fellowship program and the deadline to apply is Sept. 18.
