Each year approximately 3,500 infants age one year and younger die of sleep-related deaths including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB). After a 50% decline in sleep related deaths in the 1990s following the Back to Sleep campaign, the death rate has remained unchanged since 2000 and significant disparities exist. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends safe sleep environment and other evidence based tactics to reduce the risk of all sleep-related deaths.
