Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when blood clots form in the deep veins in the lower leg or thigh, blocking the flow of blood back out of the leg. DVT does not always have symptoms but can cause leg swelling, pain or tenderness and warm, red or discolored skin. Get immediate medical help if you have these symptoms because the clot could travel to the lungs or heart (called an embolism).
Carle interventional radiologists, pulmonologists and intensive care specialists collaborate to make an early diagnosis and deliver effective treatment for DVT and pulmonary embolism.
The Carle Heart and Vascular Institute is one of the largest cardiovascular institutes in Illinois.
