Carle Richland Memorial Hospital announces plans to expand and modernize facility
The Carle Health system board approved a $45 million investment in Carle Richland Memorial Hospital, including a new specialty medical office building and an expansion of the Emergency Department (ED), located in Olney, Illinois. The effort is part of Carle Health’s continued commitment in bringing access to high-quality care and services across the region.

By bringing specialty services together and expanding the Emergency Department, this investment improves coordination for care teams and helps patients access timely care more easily, close to home. The new facility will consolidate outpatient specialty clinics currently located in Carle Richland Memorial Hospital, as well as additional locations at Carle Surgical Services and Carle Olney. It will also house a new laboratory space and infusion center for the community.

Gina Thomas, DNP, MBA, president of Carle Richland Memorial Hospital, is pleased to share the news with the community about the major additions and updates they will notice taking place soon.

“Carle Richland has been a part of this community for over 70 years and we have been putting a lot of work and effort into our campus planning for the future,” Thomas said. “This specialty medical office building will bring all of our outpatient specialty services, such as cardiology, urology, podiatry - just to name a few - to one location. Above all, this positions us for growth and expansion opportunities to provide additional specialty services as we look at what’s most needed ahead.”

The 46,000 square foot, two-story clinic will be built on the southwest side of the current Carle Richland Memorial Hospital campus. It will attach to the hospital, making movement between the hospital and clinic easy for both team members and patients.

The medical office building is set to break ground late summer. Upon the completion of the medical office building, projected in late Fall of 2027, work will begin on the expansion of the Carle Richland Emergency Department.

“This is a two-phased building project,” Thomas said. “By moving the Laboratory into the new building, we will be able to expand the Emergency Department and make dedicated areas for registration, triage and private patient care rooms. With these changes patients can continue to count on safe, high-quality care from local, compassionate care teams at the Carle Richland medical campus”

The ED expansion project will begin in the fall of 2027, with a target completion date of summer 2028.

At a later date, teams will celebrate the beginning phases of the project with a groundbreaking ceremony. The health system will provide regular updates about the project through the Carle Richland Memorial Hospital Facebook page to inform the community about the progress.
