Renny Alex, 18, just wanted a quiet place to play music for other people without calling attention to himself. Instead, his Tuesday evening piano playing in the atrium of Carle BroMenn Medical Center has warmed the hearts of team members and visitors.

More than 1,000 students can be found volunteering at various Carle Health locations in central Illinois, but more are welcome to be part of the crew in Olney and Danville.

Comfort Cart is a new program at Carle Foundation Hospital to support patients in a similar fashion to a volunteer program already bringing reprieve to patients at Carle BroMenn Medical Center.

A long road back from two strokes led Chuck Belanger to the lobby of Carle Cancer Institute Urbana where he volunteers to play piano and inspire others through the Volunteer Services Creative Arts Music Program.

Minimum commitment is one three-hour shift per week, and teen volunteers start the end of May or beginning of June.

Give time to others listening to concerns, being a support person, writing a letter or reading to a patient in hospice care.

“The volunteers are such a great resource because they can spend one-on-one time with our (cardiac) patients after a big life event.”
