Your family will come to the Carle ECHO building to have a hearing test. ECHO stands for “Expanding Children’s Hearing Opportunities.”

Your family will check in at the front desk and then sit in the waiting room.

The friendly audiologist will call your child’s name when it’s time for the hearing test.

You and your child will walk down the hallway to a special room called a sound booth.  It’s very quiet inside the booth.  This is what the sound booth looks like.  Your child will sit on your lap or in a chair by themselves if able.

The audiologist has a special flashlight (otoscope) that they will use to look in both of your child’s ears. If your child is upset by this procedure, it can be delayed until the end of the visit.

The audiologist may then do some tests that require holding a soft rubber tip up to each of your child’s ears. The tip will make some humming sounds but will not cause discomfort. Toys are often used to distract the child while the testing is performed.

An audiologist will sit in the booth with you to help your child learn the visual reinforcement game. Sounds will be played through either the speakers or soft earphones placed in your child’s ears. Most children will naturally look for the sound’s source. When they do, a toy will light up and/or a video will come on to reward them for looking for the sound.

Please note that the room will need to be quiet during the test so your child can listen for soft sounds.

Having a hearing test at ECHO is lots of fun!
