For its excellence across many specialties, the North American Skull Base Society (NASBS) is recognizing the program as a Multidisciplinary Team of Distinction.
“The NASBS is the major association for skull base surgeons in the United States and in the world, so they have members from all over the globe,” Wael Mostafa, MD, PhD, head of neurosurgery, Carle Foundation Hospital, said. “To be recognized as a team of distinction, which elevates the status of the program and assures patients we are delivering care on par with other major centers.”
To receive recognition, a team must include members of different specialties within the skull base who also have NASBS membership. The physicians that made the program eligible for recognition include:

We would like to recognize other members of the skull base and brain tumor multidisciplinary team: Jonathan Bailey, DMD, MD; Ryan Porter, MD; Jonathan McJunkin, MD; Kelly Cunningham, MD; Sinsia Stanic, MD; Kalika Sarma, MD; Daniel Barnett, MD; Nader Darwish, MD; Patrick Fernandes, MD; Vamsi Vasireddy, Maria Grosse Perdekamp, MD; Priyank Patel, DO; Prem Sobti, MD; Pratima Chalasani, MD; James Egner, MD; Suparna Mantha, MD; Tanmay Sahai, MD; Kendrith Rowland, MD; Blake Weis, MD; Douglas Morton, MD; Gregory Punch, MD; Jason Huston, MD; Daniel Warren, MD; David Kimball, MD; Anatoliy Vasberg, MD; Srijan Valaspalli, MD; Karen White, MD; Mark Johnson, MD; Anupam Verma, MD; Temitope Shodunke, MD; Amrendra Miranpuri, MD; Brian Mason, MD; Charles Guidot, MD. We are grateful for Carle’s leadership, the advanced practice providers, nursing staff, administrative staff and support staff.
“We earned this designation by building a dedicated skull base program that consistently brings together neurosurgery, rhinology/otolaryngology, oncology, neuroradiology, radiation oncology, endocrinology, and other subspecialties around each patient’s case,” Dr. Amine said.
With each physician focused on a different aspect of the patient's health, areas of need are quickly identified for the most effective management of their condition. “This recognition by itself is a testament to the hard work of multiple team members over the years to build the brain tumor and skull base program,” Dr. Mostafa said.
“Patients can require neurosurgery, ENT, endocrinology and radiation oncology,” Dr. Mansuri said. “Different teams working together with active discussion helps bring the best treatment for the patient.”
Dr. Mechas also runs the Carle Cleft Lip and Palate team.
“Collaborative care leads to improved outcomes and superior ways to treat patients,” Dr. Mechas said. “We coordinate and collaborate to ensure the team is aligned, and frequent communication is key.”
With a multi-surgeon approach, the team can provide world-class care to complex surgical cases. This ensures that patients receive the treatment they need while staying close to home. “Because each specialty contributes to a different perspective, we can select the least invasive, most effective sequence of treatments tailored to the patient’s tumor type, anatomy and goals,” Dr. Amine said.
The program at CFH continues to expand into clinical excellence with a new clinical neurosurgical oncology fellowship. The first fellow began in January of this year, Dr. Irakliy Abramov, a clinical neurosurgical oncology fellow at Carle Foundation Hospital. The goal of this fellowship is to train physicians to be well-rounded and provide evidence-based, compassionate care through hands-on clinical training.
Fellows in this program build their surgical skills, practicing their ability to evaluate and care for a variety of neurosurgical cases.
New training opportunities like this fellowship advance care through education which is a priority of the Carle Neuroscience Institute. Surgeons with this training develop the skills to provide the best approach to treating each patient and support the best health outcomes.
“For me, this recognition is meaningful because it validates, on a national level, the culture of collaboration we have worked hard to build around skull base patients at Carle,” Dr. Amine said. “It confirms that our patients in central Illinois have access to the same level of multidisciplinary skull base care that is typically associated with large academic centers without needing to travel far from home.”
The health system’s focus on bringing innovative care solutions to east central Illinois and this recognition will help the continued growth of the expert physicians coming to this area to serve patients.
“It is great to have our team here at Carle and all the hard work and excellent multidisciplinary outcomes be recognized,” Dr. Mechas said. “I joined NASBS for the collegiality, multidiscipline opportunities, and to support an organization that exemplifies excellence in one of my surgical realms.”
