Carle Foundation Hospital has achieved the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™, marking five years earning the honor (2016-2020). The distinction places Carle in the top 1 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades.“We’re proud to be recognized for sustained performance year after year,” said Robert Healy, chief Quality officer. “It’s one the reasons we’re a trusted regional partner to handle some of the most complex medical treatments.”
For many hospitals, delivering high quality care while maintaining patient safety is a difficult task. But, Carle’s strong, capable staff is being recognized for the commitment to safe patient care.
Carle’s efforts led to its recognition as one of the America’s Best hospitals. Carle is one of five hospitals in Illinois and the only hospital outside the Chicago metro area to make the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals list.

From 2016 through 2018, patients treated in hospitals achieving the award had, on average, a 27.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.*
And during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America's 50 Best Hospitals Award, 188,768 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for Heart Failure at a hospital that achieved the award had, on average, a 33.8 percent lower risk of dying during their hospital stay than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.*
Recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2020 study period (2016 through 2018), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
