New leader of research informatics brings a global perspective to improve localized patient care

Witnessing a live emergency response during an interview visit cemented interest in working at Carle Health as the new medical director of research informatics.

“I was truly impressed, Adil Haider, MD, MPH, said. “As a trauma surgeon, seeing how quickly and seamlessly the team responded to urgent patient needs reflected exactly what patient centered care should look like.”

Dr. Haider (pronounced HED-er, like Heather without the “th”) is a globally recognized surgeon-scientist, academic leader and founder of Boston Health AI, a health-tech firm focused on building clinical support tools that improve efficiency, quality of care and health equity globally.

Dr. Haider is dividing his time between Carle Illinois College of Medicine (CI MED) as its chief artificial intelligence officer centered on advancing AI-enabled medical education, translational research and clinical innovation and at Carle Health, where he will have limited time as a surgeon while focusing mostly on incorporating artificial intelligence in patient care and research.

“My goal is to use artificial intelligence to reduce the burden on clinicians and allow them to focus on what matters most; the patient,” he said. “If we can learn from every patient interaction, we can improve care for the next patient. Artificial intelligence tools can streamline documentation, surface insights from data and support better clinical and research decisions.”

Jennifer Eardley, PhD, vice president, Research, Carle Health, said, “Dr. Haider’s international reputation as an innovator and leader in development of AI informed tools for improvement of clinical care helps us set the stage for transformative impact through informatics research at Carle.”

“We are excited to have his leadership at Carle Health. As an experienced mentor and grant-funded investigator, Dr. Haider also will guide our investments in health data research and capture the creativity of our outstanding CI MED students, bringing new ideas to improving healthcare for our patients and teams,” she said.

Dr. Haider grew up in rural Huntington, Ind., with first-hand experience struggling to access healthcare. He held leadership and senior academic roles at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at the Center for Surgery and Public Health, a joint program of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, before being recruited to serve as a dean of the Medical College at Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi, Pakistan.

At AKU, he played a key leadership role in the national COVID-19 response and led teams that delivered care to approximately 500,000 people affected by major floods. He also led the development of the AKU Manual of Clinical Practice Guidelines, a national platform now used by more than 20,000 physicians across Pakistan, supporting care for millions of patients. During his tenure, he quadrupled research funding, achieved top global rankings, and secured multiple international accreditations for the medical college.

His health-tech firm, Boston Health AI, operates in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. Since its start in 2025, the firm has focused on building end-to-end clinical support tools that improve efficiency, quality of care, and health equity for one billion lives globally.

In a TEDx RMI (Rehman Medical Institute) presentation  Haider, explains his motivation for using AI, emphasizing how every lived experience is worth learning and how each experience can help save lives using the tools and technology available to give care equally. “A woman getting care in Ghana can inform care for a woman in Boston and that will truly be people-driven medicine.”

Carle Health brings innovative technology solutions to many aspects of patient care and Dr. Haider will help guide the health system’s approach to improving the clinician and patient experience through AI. Advances supported by Dr. Haider and Carle Health physicians and researchers will change how patients receive care both locally and globally.
