The Carle Foundation Hospital General Surgery Residency is a large community hospital training program with university affiliation. Residents enjoy access to experienced subspecialist faculty in a residency training system situated in a culturally diverse college town in the heart of Illinois. The program celebrated its first graduates in 2015 and continues to flourish as it works in concert with the ground-breaking Carle Illinois College of Medicine. As a small, cohesive group, our residents enjoy an atmosphere of comradery, as well as establish early professional relationships with attending faculty that permits for early autonomy.
Program graduates have matched into competitive fellowships and have begun promising careers as board-certified surgeons. Carle is dedicated to equipping its graduates with the skills and knowledge that will position them well to be leaders in surgery.
Program Mission
We educate compassionate, proficient and insightful physicians committed to evidence-based patient care and the advancement of the art and science of surgery.
Program Vision
Educational Goals of the Program
Bruce A. Orkin, MD, FACS, FASCRS
Dr. Orkin is a practicing colorectal surgeon at Carle Health in Urbana, IL, where he serves as the program director of the ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency Program. He has been a practicing colorectal surgeon for 35 years.
He completed residency training in general surgery at UCLA and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He completed fellowships in gastrointestinal research at Mayo Clinic Rochester and in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Orkin has been actively involved in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), rising to Chairmanship of the Review Committee for Colon and Rectal Surgery. He was a member of the Executive Council of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and is a senior examiner for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Orkin is married and has three children and four grandchildren. He enjoys sailing, tennis, biking, music, theater, quilting, baking and playing with his grandchildren.
Residency training includes hands-on patient care experiences both in and out of the operating room as well as didactic sessions, interactive conferences and simulation. The core curriculum not only provides residents with exposure to the full spectrum of general surgery as science, it teaches about the social, economic and political issues that can affect surgical practice.

Didactics
Weekly educational conferences are held during a dedicated morning block, with residents excused from clinical duties to participate.
Other Conferences
Other Educational Opportunities
Research and scholarly activity has become a major focus of our residency program, and we strive to educate our faculty and residents on research processes and methods. The program hosts a monthly surgery research conference to promote research productivity through collaborative efforts, inside and outside the division. Residents also have the opportunity to attend research lectures provided by the program, as well as other units and departments at Carle Foundation Hospital and the University of Illinois. Additionally, the program is supported by research coordinators who assist residents with the development of their research study, serve as a liaison with the Carle Institutional Review Board (IRB) and guide residents throughout the duration of their projects. We are proud of our accomplishments in research. Our residents are very active in participating in local, regional and national conferences, and have claimed several awards. Below is a list of our faculty's research interests.
