A healing environment is important for all of our patients, but for patients with behavioral health conditions, the atmosphere can have an even greater significance. That’s why the team at Carle BroMenn Medical Center is excited to debut its 13,000 square foot renovated space for inpatient mental health and addiction recovery.
With the new space configuration, capacity in the mental health area will increase from 13 to 19 and from 5 to 9 in medical detoxification, providing greater access to services to meet a well-documented community need.

Wendi Ashford, coordinator of Behavioral Health, Carle BroMenn Medical Center, said “It is exciting to see all of the planning come to fruition, particularly now as more of the community may be feeling isolated or experiencing other behavioral health symptoms.”

At first glance, it’s a bright and airy atmosphere, but if you take a closer look, you may notice the unit’s features go beyond a pleasing appearance. They include several safety features that mitigate risks for harm and maintain patient dignity.
“Our top priority is patient and staff safety, and this unit was designed with those things at the forefront of everyone’s mind,” Theresa Prosser, MSN, nursing director, Medical Surgical Services, said.
For example, restroom doors consist of a soft, yet sturdy material that prevents potential isolation while maintaining privacy. Also, wall clocks were previously prohibited but have now been installed flush with the wall.
Chrissy Jennings, RN, manager for Behavioral Health, said “It feels more spacious and refreshing and definitely improves the therapeutic environment. We will have better visibility of the patients and more opportunity for interaction.”
The new space includes dimming lights and music therapy options to decrease stimulation as necessary. The family check-in area is larger with additional locker space for visitors to store their belongings. The communal areas for both mental health and addiction offer a much more comforting setting as well.
“The larger group rooms allow them to spread out further and focus on the therapy itself,” Jennings said. “We even researched paint colors to ensure that we are doing all we can to provide the best setting for recovery.”
The $4.8 million expansion and renovation project was funded in part by private and public donations. Carle expects to welcome patients in the next few weeks as the renovation project recently passed the Illinois Department of Public Health inspection.
