Carle Foundation Hospital nationally recognized with an ‘A’ for Spring 2021 Leapfrog Safety Grade

Carle Foundation Hospital nationally recognized with an ‘A’ for Spring 2021 Leapfrog Safety Grade

Carle Foundation Hospital received an “A” grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Carle’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country and updates their rankings every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.

“While in the throes of the COVID pandemic, where to receive lifesaving care could never be more important,” Lakita Scott, vice president of Quality said. “It’s vital to provide our patients, visitors and staff with a sense of safety and security that we all value in the delivery of care for ourselves, our families and our community.”

Quality Consultant Katlyn Morin said when choosing where to receive healthcare, we can all agree we want to choose a facility where infection rates are low and hospital–acquired conditions are rare, a place where hand hygiene and medication safety are a top priority.

“Patients are paying attention to this information and we need to as well,” Robert Healy, MD, chief medical quality officer said. ”We all play a role in maintaining an environment where everyone does their part to make sure the care is of the highest quality and delivered in the safest possible manner.”

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Carle Foundation Hospital shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
